Obtaining meaningful measures of urban ecosystem restoration success depends on specific project goals and objectives that can vary significantly among projects. The Mission Reach Ecosystem Restoration Project aimed to restore wildlife habitat while maintaining flood conveyance along 8 miles of a previously channelized segment of the San Antonio River near the urban core. High ecological goals were set regarding native plant coverage and diversity with the assumption that meeting these goals would result in provision of habitat for a diversity of wildlife. Monitoring of the project is showing successful outcomes for native flora and fauna including birds and fish. A variety of project challenges, lessons learned and examples of successful ecosystem restoration outcomes will be presented.
